Clearfly FAQs

  Q. Why one network?

A.  It saves you money.

Communications technology has evolved at breakneck pace over the last few decades. First came the telephone, then data communications and, in the last two decades, cellular phones and the Internet. This has caused multiple network infrastructures to evolve separately, causing a huge amount of duplication and inefficiencies. Ultimately, this has translated into higher costs for businesses and consumers. No more. With the advent of the IP protocol and VoIP, in particular, networks have started to converge, resulting into lower operating costs. So far, most of these benefits have been reaped by large enterprises with lots of IT resources available. Clearfly Communications has packaged all the quality and reliability that large customers enjoy to a price within reach of any business, no matter what size.

Q. What is VoIP?

VoIP is an acronym which stands for “Voice over Internet Protocol” or, more accurately, “Voice over IP”. In short, it is a smarter version of the traditional phone system. Voice over IP transmits voice conversations over a data network using the Internet Protocol. Internet Protocol is a set of communication protocols that enable people to connect over the Internet. Voice over Internet Protocol allows a service provider, such as Clearfly, to sell voice and data services using the same connection, thereby generating cost savings for the customer. It also has the capability to provide exciting new services such as: integrated messaging, bandwidth on demand, High-Definition voice, and voice portals for businesses. The possibilities are endless. Any voice application that can be envisioned can be enabled through Voice over IP.
Q.  I have heard that voice-over-the-Internet services do not deliver the level of quality that businesses expect. Is VoIP reliable enough for my business?
Clearfly does not use the Internet to provide Voice over IP; we use the Internet Protocol (IP) i.e. the software language of the Internet. Clearfly uses IP to transfer and connect its customers with either the Internet or the traditional telephone network. The fact that Clearfly does not use the Internet to transport its voice services separates it from most other Voice over IP providers.

Guaranteeing the same level of quality and reliability using VoIP as is expected from a business-grade service provider requires the operator to control all key elements of the network from one end-user device to the other, or from one user device to the public phone network. Controlling all the elements of the network enables the operator to guarantee that time-critical information, such as voice packets, are given high priority over other types of information.

Q. What about Internet access?

Most Clearfly’s services include Internet access. The amount of bandwidth available with each service is calculated in order to amply meet the needs of the typical organization for which the solution is designed. For instance, Our ClearPhone II product, which is designed for offices with 25 to 50 employees, includes 2 T1s and 16 phone lines, scalable up to 23. When no phone lines are being used, the full 3Mbps of symmetrical Internet access is available to data and can be used for bandwidth intensive applications, such as data back up. As phone calls are being placed or received, the system intelligently allocates the remaining bandwidth to data while guaranteeing that voice traffic is handled with the appropriate priority and that sufficient capacity is left available for data applications.

Q. Where is Clearphone available?

Since Clearfly relies on its own network facilities to deliver business-grade reliability and quality, there must be a Clearfly point of presence in your market in order for your business to have access to ClearPhone(tm). We are currently located in tens of markets in the western United States, and rapidly expanding. Check our coverage map or phone number lookup function to determine if our service is available to you.

  Q. Why one provider?

 A. It simplifies your life.

If you are like most small or medium size businesses in this country, you probably purchase your phone service, your Internet service and your cellular service from three different providers. This means that you have three separate contracts, you have to reconcile three different invoices each month, and have three different companies to call when things go wrong. Clearfly is a one-stop-shop solution for all your communications services. This translates into significant time savings and more time that you can dedicate to running your business.

Other provider FAQs
Q. Is Clearfly Communications a phone company or an ISP?

Clearfly Communications is a provider of integrated communications services for small and medium size businesses. Integrated communications make intelligent use of the IP protocol and packed-switched technology to provide data, voice and, more recently, mobile communications to consumers and businesses. Clearfly is a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC), a type of telecommunications operator that has been enabled by the FCC through the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This legislation allowed companies, such as Clearfly, to place equipment in the local telephone office and to use the telephone cables to provide communications services in competition with telecommunications incumbents such as Qwest or AT&T. Most CLECs use a technology called VoIP to deliver voice services over the same network they use to deliver data.
Q. I am too busy running my business, and I don’t want to deal with the hassle of switching providers. Why should I consider a transition to your service?

You can start saving money today. Clearfly coordinates the provisioning of all the components of your data and voice services so the transition can occur simultaneously, without need to retrain users, and without any interruptions to your day to day operations. Since Clearfly interfaces directly with your PBX, the transition is transparent and most users in the company will not even know the service provider has been replaced.
Q. You claim my business can save up to 30% on my monthly expenses. How can Clearfly charge such low rates and stay in business?

Clearfly takes advantage of so called convergence of data, voice and mobile communications. Until recently, these networks were run on entirely separate infrastructures and with significant duplication of resources, leading to higher prices for consumers. For example, most companies in the US still use separate circuits for data and voice, which, ironically, often connect to the local phone company’s central office. VoIP technology allows the sharing of a single circuit, reducing infrastructure costs and enabling Clearfly to pass these savings to the consumer. Clearfly also reduces cellular airtime consumption by routing all voice traffic to the corporate wireless LAN while the user is located within the office premises.
Q. Are Clearfly’s long distance rates competitive?

Clearfly does not charge for long distance calls in the US and Canada. Our monthly flat rate fee includes unlimited long distance. We also offer competitive international rates.

Other solution FAQs
Q. I invested a lot of money and time in my current phone system. Do I need to retire my PBX and desktop phones in order to use your solution?

No. Business Voice-over-IP comes in different flavors; however most solutions fall into two different categories: so called hosted voice and SIP Trunks. Hosted voice is basically an outsourced PBX service: You need to purchase specialized VoIP phones and dispose of your PBX. It is particularly suitable for businesses with 1-5 employees that do not need a PBX.  SIP trunks, on the other hand, are a replacement of the analog phone service or traditional TDM trunks, and interoperate directly with your existing PBX. No hardware upgrades are necessary. Clearfly also allows you to extend your PBX's functionality onto your mobile handsets, so you can implement single number, 4 digit dialing plans and take advantage of PBX features such as call forwarding, DND etc on your mobile phones.  If you are considering changing your voice service to an IP-based solution check our "15 reasons to keep your phone system" analysis.
Q. Will ClearPhone work with my phone system (PBX)?

Almost certainly yes. Because our customer premise equipment supports standard analog, PRI and IP/Ethernet interfaces, Clearfly interoperates with all major PBX brands and models, new or less new: Nortel, Avaya, Toshiba, CISCO, Shoreline and many others. Still in doubt? Send email to Clearfly to inquire about your specific brand and model.
Q. The phone service we use has proven extremely reliable over the years, and the quality of the service more than meets our needs. Can Clearfly guarantee that my service will always be as dependable? How do you achieve greater quality?

Saving money may be important to your business, but it can’t be done at the expenses of the reliability of your voice and data services. Thanks to the end-to-end control Clearfly exerts over its network infrastructure, ClearPhone™ delivers the reliability you have come to expect from your traditional voice service, yet it benefits from the inherent lower cost of an IP-based solution. Thanks to the use of advanced compression algorithms, when calling other ClearPhone users, such as co-workers in remote offices, you will experience a clarity in the voice conversation that you have never imagined possible from your phone service, Some have compared this experience to the difference between listening to AM radio versus FM radio.
Q. We are a small business with one single office and 10 employees. Can we take advantage of your solutions?

Yes. Clearfly’s solutions have been designed with companies between 5 and 250 employees in mind. ClearPhone Lite, our entry-level product, is designed for companies with 5 to 15 employees and comes at an incredibly low price. Q. We are a regional business with multiple offices and over 100 employees. Can we take advantage of your solutions?

Yes. Many of our customers are companies with a regional presence and multiple remote offices  . Our ClearPhone III product is probably best suited to accommodate the needs of your company’s headquarters office, while each remote office can choose among 5 different integrated packages based on the number of local users.   Q. What is Mobile SIP?

A. Mobile SIP is a new product that extends the power of your PBX and of Clearphone SIP Trunks to your mobile users. It enables your company to:

  • Reduce cellular costs: Lower your cellular minute consumption by using Wi-Fi wherever available. Don't want to drop that important call as you leave the office? No worries: SIP mobile will seamlessly transfer your call to the cellular network without interruption (the only thing you may notice is a drop in voice quality)

  • Improve voice quality on mobile connections: SIP Mobile takes advantage of higher bandwidth and signal strength available through your Wi-Fi network to improve voice quality. Think of the difference between AM and FM radio.

  • Extend the power of your PBX:  Make your mobile phone an extension of your desktop phone: toggle calls between the two devices, use 4-digit dialing to reach colleagues regardless of location, device or network.  Transfer, hold calls, have your devices ring simultaneously etc.

  • Increase productivity: Ensure key staff is always reachable. No dead spots, missed or dropped calls. No need to check multiple voice mailboxes.

Q. I am concerned about the escalating costs of cellular subscriptions in my company. Can Clearfly help us?

Yes. As most businesses in the US, your office probably has a wireless LAN, and many of your employees have a wireless LAN at home. Research shows that over half of cellular minutes in businesses are consumed by employees making and receiving business calls on their mobile phone in the office or at home. With today’s so called dual mode mobile handsets, there is no reason to be using cellular minutes while you are within reach of an adequately engineered Wireless LAN. When you move away from your WLAN, Clearfly will automatically re-route your call to the cellular network so that your conversation will not be interrupted. Vice versa, you will be able to walk into the office coming from outside while having a conversation on your mobile phone and the Clearfly service will seamlessly route your call from the cellular network to the office WLAN.
Q. We are also concerned about the complexity of managing two separate voice services: fixed and mobile. Some of our employees even complain about the duplication of phone numbers, mailboxes, devices etc. Can Clearfly help us regain control of our company's communications?

Yes. Clearfly extends the power of your PBX onto the mobile phone, giving your company more control over the use of mobile communications. You can replicate all the features available on your desktop phone onto the mobile handset. For instance, you can implement your company’s 4-digit dialing plan, call forwarding, do not disturb etc on every mobile phone. Even more importantly, your employees no longer need to use two separate phone numbers and two separate voice mailboxes. Finally, because all mobile calls go through the PBX, you have better control over phone usage in your organization.
